There are a number of influences promoting the importance of becoming proactive. The advantages of addressing what continues to become know of a large problem has been recognized by a number of groups and institutions. The numbers provoking a heightened patient safety focus are staggering. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) nosocomial infections affect an estimated 2,000,000 patients each year. The cost of these infections is estimated to be in excess of 4.5 billion in a single year. The realization that these numbers can be significantly reduced has prompted the Joint Commission on the Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) as well as local, state and federal health departments to take steps to address the problem. As of 2001 JCAHO issued E.C. 1.7 requiring accredited healthcare organizations to address potential pathogens in their air and water supplies. Recently the Joint Commission took another step forward by making nosocomial infections a sentinel event, requiring them to be reported. These two initiatives not only increase the quality of care resulting in saved lives but also require hospitals to take action that will reduce their costs and exposure. In addition, the Center for Medicare/Medicaid Services (CMS) has threatened a number of hospitals to remove them from Medicare/Medicaid reimbursements because of their high level of nosocomial infections. (U.S. moves to halt rise hospital infections, Chicago Tribune 10/29/02) A wide range of agencies and institutions have realized the advantages of addressing this problem.
